Deputy Principal

Leadership Series

What sets this Leadership Series apart?

This Series has been designed in direct response to requests from school leadership teams across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. It is designed for Deputy Principals both new and experienced.

The learning is directly connected to your kura's priorities while offering ongoing professional learning, informing the Deputy Principal's Professional Growth Cycle.

Each DP brings a real leadership or improvement challenge into the series and applies the learning to that work.

The aim is for them to return to school with greater clarity, stronger relational leadership and practical approaches they can use immediately.

They will also build a regional network of Deputy Principals who understand the realities of the role and can continue learning from each other beyond the programme.

01 / Ongoing PLD

Professional learning has greater impact when it is sustained over time, connected to practice and revisited through reflection and application. This series gives Deputy Principals dedicated time to develop their leadership capability, apply new thinking to a real improvement priority from their own kura, and return to learning with insights from their experience.

Across the series, DPs build greater confidence and capability to:

  • listen and understand before seeking to influence

  • challenge thinking while maintaining strong professional relationships

  • lead purposeful and sometimes difficult conversations

  • notice and reflect on the impact of their leadership

  • use inquiry and evidence to strengthen improvement practice

  • apply, reflect, refine and revisit their learning over time.

The result is not simply new knowledge, but leadership practice that becomes stronger through repeated application, reflection and professional dialogue.

02 / Expert Facilitation

This series is facilitated by an experienced principal, coach and school improvement partner, bringing more than 30 years in education across Aotearoa New Zealand and the UK.

Sessions are designed to be safe enough to be honest and purposeful enough to challenge thinking. DPs actively work through real leadership challenges, test ideas, reflect on the impact of their actions and learn through professional dialogue with colleagues.

The aim is to build confidence through practice, so each DP leaves with greater clarity and practical approaches they can take straight back to their kura.

“Anita leads with a rare combination of strategic foresight, exceptional organisation, and genuine collaboration, consistently elevating standards across the entire curriculum.”

Deputy Principal, Torotoroa-Amberley School, North Canterbury

03 / Regional Collaboration

Leadership can be strengthened when we learn alongside others who understand the role. Each workshop brings together Deputy Principals from across the region, creating opportunities to share experiences, challenge thinking and learn from one another.

Workshops are held in a local school within each region, making participation accessible while connecting learning directly to the realities of local kura.

Over time, these connections become more than workshop conversations. They create a regional professional network where DPs can continue sharing ideas, seeking perspective and supporting one another beyond the series.
